The Jay Dee Tee

In official collaboration with legendary Los Angeles record label Delicious Vinyl and Yancey Boys Media, KU drops the Jay Dee Tee Collection. An ode to the prolific and legendary one-of-one producer, J Dilla. Celebrating some of his most recognisable tracks and the nicknames that his friends, family, and collaborators knew him by.

This exclusive collab and limited run, features designs by Posterlad, bringing to life a tip of the hat to James Yancey aka J Dilla through screen printing.

The Jay Dee Nicknames Tee celebrates a handful of the many nicknames that his friends, collaborators, and fans knew him by. Many knew James Yancey by two of his most commonly credited producer names, Jay Dee, or J Dilla. Others that were around before his star and reputation began to rise, simply knew him as James.

“I think the nicknames were an extension of his shyness, they were the person you got instead of James the shy guy”- Frank Nitty (childhood friend, and goto collaborator)

For many of the nicknames, we can only assume where they come from and maintain a bit of mystery to their origins. A quiet, insightful, melancholy vibe that Dilla sometimes carried seemed to attract the name Dill Withers. A reference to one of the all-time great singer-songwriters, Bill Withers. Buddy Lee can be attributed to the name of the record that he and Q-Tip were planning on embarking on before his death, and Jon Doe speaks to one of his other credited producer names, and the anonymity that he appreciated.

The Jay Dee Songs Tee is a nod to some Dilla beats that are synonymous with his musical genius, and represent a wide range of his production catalog. Leading with A Tribe Called Quest classic, “1nce Again”, the ‘Donuts’ delicacy “Workinonit, that Madlib blunt burning joint, “The Red”, as well as hits from Common, Slum Village, and The Pharcyde. Many were lucky to have the opportunity to have their ideas/songs shaped by J Dilla, and this Tee celebrates his personal work, and his impact on the entire genre of hip-hop, and some of its most notable artists.
